Quail Creek History:
25 Years of Growth and Resort Living
Quail Creek is one of Southern Arizona’s newest and most successful active adult communities, but its history actually began years before the first Robson home was built. The community has evolved from a largely undeveloped desert property into a resort-style community of more than 5,400 residents and approximately 3,000 homes.
Early Planning (1980s–1999)
The land that is now Quail Creek sits along the western foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains between Green Valley and Sahuarita. During the late 1980s, Pima County approved a specific development plan envisioning a large master-planned residential community of up to 5,000 homes. The original developer, Emerald Homes, installed much of the initial infrastructure and began construction of the community. Development progressed slowly throughout the 1990s, however, and fewer than 100 homes were completed before the project changed ownership.
Today, that original neighborhood is affectionately known by longtime residents as the “bird streets.” Nearly every street in the first phase of development was named after birds — including Canyon Wren, Bank Swallow, Mourning Dove, Sage Sparrow and Purple Martin, and others — and the nickname has endured even as the community has grown to encompass thousands of homes. Those original residences remain a unique part of Quail Creek’s history, representing the community’s earliest chapter before Robson Communities transformed the development into the premier active adult resort community it is today.
Robson Acquires Quail Creek (1999)
The turning point came in 1999 when Robson Communities acquired the remaining undeveloped property. Robson had already established a reputation for successful active adult communities such as SaddleBrooke and PebbleCreek, and envisioned Quail Creek as its Southern Arizona showcase.
Following the acquisition, Robson worked with the Town of Sahuarita to amend the master plan, annex additional land, and redesign the community while maintaining the original maximum build-out of approximately 5,000 homes.
The Early Years (2000–2005)
Construction accelerated quickly after Robson’s acquisition. Major milestones included:
2001: Opening of the first model home village.
2002: Opening of the golf pro shop, restaurant, and lounge.
2003: Arts & Technology rooms and bocce courts opened.
2004: Four new tennis courts completed.
2005: Grand opening of the Madera Clubhouse, establishing the community’s first major social center.
These early amenities helped distinguish Quail Creek from many older Green Valley neighborhoods by creating a centralized country club lifestyle rather than relying on scattered recreation centers.
Expansion and Growth (2006–2020)
Throughout the next decade, Quail Creek expanded steadily as demand for active adult living in Southern Arizona increased. Several major additions transformed the community:
2008: Golf course expanded to 27 holes.
2009: Named one of Where to Retire magazine’s Best Neighborhoods.
2011: Opening of the Anza Athletic Club.
2014: Opening of the original 16-court pickleball complex.
2015: Creative Arts & Technology Center opened.
2018: Expansion of The Grill restaurant and lounge.
2020: Major renovation of the Madera Clubhouse.
During this period, home designs also evolved considerably, with larger great rooms, higher ceilings, more energy-efficient construction, expanded outdoor living spaces, and increasingly luxurious finishes.
The Canyon Club Era (2023–Present)
The largest investment in Quail Creek’s history began with construction of the Canyon Club. Opened in 2025, the approximately 36,000-square-foot Canyon Club added resort-style pool, indoor lap pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, bistro, outdoor gathering spaces, and 16 additional pickleball courts nearby.
Rather than replacing the Madera Clubhouse or Anza Athletic Club, the Canyon Club expanded Quail Creek’s amenity offerings and created a new social and wellness hub for residents.
Why Quail Creek Developed Differently
Unlike many Green Valley neighborhoods that were built incrementally between the 1960s and 1990s by multiple builders, Quail Creek was conceived as a single master-planned community. That allowed for consistent architectural standards, a staffed gated entrance, integrated golf, recreation, and dining facilities, extensive walking paths and landscaped common areas, modern infrastructure and continuous amenity investment as the community grew.
This master-planned approach has helped Quail Creek maintain a cohesive appearance and resort atmosphere that continues to attract buyers from across the country.
Today
Now celebrating more than 25 years since Robson’s acquisition, Quail Creek has become the largest active adult community in the Green Valley area. The community continues to add new home designs and amenities while benefiting from its location near the Santa Rita Mountains, Madera Canyon, and the Sonoran Desert. Its combination of newer homes, resort-style facilities, and centralized planning has made it one of Southern Arizona’s premier 55+ communities.
