Applying for a mortgage? Be prepared for these questions

Applying for a mortgage? Be prepared for these questions

When you apply for a mortgage, you expect your lender to have some questions. But the truth is, your lender is going to have a lot of questions — and if you know what to expect before you start the application process, all of those questions can feel a lot less jarring and invasive.

A recent article from Realtor.com outlined a variety of questions you should expect when applying for a mortgage, including:

  • What is your credit score? Your credit score will, in large part, determine the interest rate on your mortgage. Your lender will no doubt run your credit report in the process of getting you pre-qualified, but it’s a good idea to know what’s on your credit report before the lender does.
  • Do you have a sufficient credit history? Your credit score is important, but so is your credit history. Your lender wants to see a variety of credit types and a long history of on-time payments.
  • How much cash do you have on hand? Lenders want to know that you have enough cash on hand to cover your down payment, inspection, and closing costs. In order to show them you have enough cash, you’ll need to provide a variety of financial documentation, including bank or brokerage statements, and a break down of your assets.
  • How much debt do you have? Even if you have a lot of cash on hand, if you also have a lot of debt, it’s going to make a lender nervous. When you’re applying for a mortgage, your lender will need to see a breakdown of any and all debt, including credit card debt, student debt, and car loans, which will help them make a decision on your eligibility for a loan.

What does this mean for you? When you apply for a mortgage, part of the process involves answering a variety of personal financial questions — but if you know they’re coming (and prepare for them in advance), the process (and the questions!) will feel a lot less stressful.

TESTIMONIALS

"Russ did a great job on taking us through the process of purchasing our new home. He is an excellent Realtor who smoothly managed our purchasing requests with fellow agents. He knows what needs to be done and worked hard to keep the process on track. He also used his list of resources to schedule home and pool inspections in a timely manner. Russ also walked us through the more challenging action of acquiring the sellers solar panel loan; a potentially lengthy process. Also, Russ was easy to contact and always got back to us immediately with accurate answers to our questions. His use of technology to officially sign documents was extremely helpful. Based upon our statement of needs, Russ was able to take us to homes that we felt would work well for us. My wife and I both highly recommend Russ Fortuno as an agent for any home buyer in the Green Valley and Quail Creek area."

"Moving to a different state can be somewhat overwhelming. We found Russ’s website and knew we needed to see him in person. We were not disappointed. He is extremely professional and being an out of state buyer, we definitely needed a Realtor we could count on. He was so helpful in finding the right house for us that it didn’t take long to make an informed decision. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone. Thanks, Russ for making this a great experience from beginning to closing."
- Dianne C., Quail Creek
"We had a great experience working with Russ Fortuno. After having a less than ideal experience with another real estate agent, we chose Russ to sell our home. We were very happy with his knowledge of the real estate market in our community of Quail Creek. He was very professional, and he never gave us unrealistic expectations. Russ was attentive to detail whether it be answering all our questions or having our house look perfect for photos. He was there for us until our house closed and we could not be more thankful for all his help and expertise."
- Sandra M., Quail Creek
